Pakistan Super League Trophy

The wait for the third edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) is almost over. But, before the cricket action begins on February 22, a ceremony will be held in Dubai tomorrow to unveil the trophy of PSL 3.

The Trophy for the tournament will be unveiled to the public at the Dubai International Stadium. Then, the trophy will be taken to the headquarters through from where it will be received by the captains of the PSL teams.

The Captain of defending champion, Peshawar Zalmi, Darren Sammy, will take the trophy to the ceremony.

In a video interview before the third edition of the Pakistan Super League, the former captain of the Windies praised the revival of international cricket in Pakistan and recalled his memories of PSL last year.

"We had to see bright scenes at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, everyone had the Zalmi flag," Sammy recalled PSL 2, as he expressed his gratitude to the Pakistani crowd. "It's time I gave them back their love." We lifted the trophy in Lahore last year, we will raise it again in Karachi on March 25."

The event will be attended by managers and owners of the PSL franchises, along with senior officials of the Pakistan Cricket Board. The defending champions Peshawar Zalmi play debutants Multan Sultans in the opening match of PSL 3 on February 22 in Dubai.

The chairman of the PCB, Mr. Najam Sethi, and Dr. Umar Saif, founder of the Vice Chancellor of Information Technology University of Punjab (ITU), signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to use “Insights” - a unique match analysis and scoring tool developed at no cost to the ITU for the coming edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and other domestic series in Pakistan, including the Quaid-e-Azam trophy, the Pakistan Cup, etc.

The system has been developed by Talha Rehmani and his team with the opinion and guidance of cricket experts such as Inzamam ul Haq, a legendary cricketer of Pakistan and current head coach of the Pakistan cricket team, and Mushtaq Ahmed, coach of Pakistan’s National Cricket Academy.

Detailed assessment sessions were conducted with these mentors and PCB support staff such as analysts, qualifiers, coaches and other coaches.

About the Insights software

Insights is an expert player profile system developed by the Information Technology University research team, Lahore, Pakistan (ITU) for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The system contains a parallel scoring application, both on the web and on Android, where the scores of the matches with the smallest details are entered using only an Android tablet, which makes it very profitable.

The scorer can enter a lot of additional information along with scores such as the location in the field, the terrain and weather information, the ball launch point, the swing and height estimate, and information.

The system can be used simultaneously by two users to enter the details of the same party to cover it with greater precision, that is, a scorekeeper can add scores while an analyst can add field and field information, etc. The user can also enter details of each delivery event, for example, if a four-hit, the user can select, from a pre-populated list, the name of the shot, if the players timed it or if it was a mishit. Similarly, the details of a batter's dismissal, a career, a point or a six, all different types of scoring events can be recorded with just a few clicks. Below are some screens of the mobile interface.

The main landing screen, the field placement screen, the scoring screen with the scoring throws appear and the throwing screen to indicate where the ball was thrown and the height of the ball compared to the ball

The data collected, both from coincidences and individuals, are then used to obtain both concrete and soft analytical results.

This can be an important tool to track a player's performance from the root level to the top, identify weak and strong areas for hitters, identify trends and factors that affect the performance of each bowler, work on improving your defects and equipment selection. E.g. If the system identifies that a player is good against the turn, he may be selected to play in friendly spin conditions.

On the other hand, if a player is weak against the turn, the repair work can be started.
Professional sports are run seriously elsewhere in the world but in Pakistan they are taken for granted and anybody who has spare time is welcome to try his hand in the business. Cricket in the country has become a surprise for quite a while and has experienced things so funny that nobody could have ever imagined. The national team’s victories and defeats both are unpredictable and the surprises within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) are mind-boggling. As fans were still reeling from the shock of team’s performance in the Champions Trophy, they got another surprise after the tournament when renowned journalist Najam Sethi was made PCB’s acting chairman just a month after his stint as Punjab’s caretaker chief minister.

It is yet to be decided as to what was the bigger surprise – Zaka Ashraf electing himself as the board’s chairman for a four-year term or Sethi’s appointment for the post. However, the appointment of Sethi is as illegal as was the election of Ashraf because the Islamabad High Court (IHC) did suspend the former chairman but not the board’s constitution. Under the constitution, the members of governing body can nominate any of their member as chairman within 45 days. But the government named Sethi as the board’s supremo who boarded to London to participate in ICC’s annual meeting. Sethi's appointment has been challenged in a court and the Transparency International has also warned of the illegal appointment. But on the other hand, ‘Aapas ki Baat’ host is releasing strict orders with smiling face and warning PCB officials that his unnamed source, which he often refers to as ‘chiriya’ (sparrow), is informing him of every development.

There are observers who believe that the aura of confidence Sethi had while taking the charge as PCB chairman was never witnessed before. Sethi has the powerful hands of present government on his back, which helped him acquire the top-notch position. Links with eminent politicians and experience of chief ministry have their importance, but in the PCB – where even big guns found it difficult to survive – Sethi’s ‘chiriya’ will not take long to take a final flight.

Najam Sethi

Addressing a press conference as PCB's acting chairman, Sethi said he was not there to play a long innings and that he would quit when his short innings would be over. If he wanted to make his innings short, he needed to make some big hits, but now it seems that the acting chairman needs to safeguard his wicket because a yorker in the form of court’s decision can break his wickets. Sethi’s appointment is not the first instance of government’s intervention in the PCB. Past governments also showed favouritism by appointing their dear ones at the top. But the appointment in question by the government that has been making decisions in haste and with perplexity is going to cost him soon.

The ICC had given the deadline of June 30 to all its member boards to install democratic setup free of government’s interference. Keeping this in view, Zaka Ashraf managed to elect himself as the board’s ‘constitutional’ chairman just two days before the general election which was challenged in the court. The incoming government showed sheer idiocy to appoint Sethi as PCB’s acting chief because the board’s current setup is neither democratic nor constitutional. That is why Pakistan will likely to face suspension from the ICC as soon as July starts, and unfortunately, nobody is considering this aspect. The ICC is also now aware of the Sethi episode after Transparency International raised the issue. Let’s see how the anchorman convinces the council in this regard because cricket in Pakistan would go further down if the country’s membership was suspended. So Sethi – who entered the ground to ‘enjoy’ a short innings – now faces a monumental task ahead about which he was unaware of before taking the charge.

Critics say that Sethi’s chiriya will fly shortly from Gaddafi Stadium because of the unconstitutional appointment. The journalist also does not want to see his chiriya caged in the stadium which provided him with the news from the echelons of power. Sethi actually wanted to leave the PCB headquarters after a brief period just as he ‘served’ briefly as Punjab’s chief minister, but now he has to perform his duties seriously as the board’s acting chief because it is not out of question that the government gives his appointment a democratic colour after which Sethi – who has been planning to play a T20 – would have to play a Test match.
When Pakistan leave for England to take part in the ICC Champions Trophy, a “vigilance expert” will probably be accompanying them to “monitor the presence of any unwanted men around the team”.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is working on a plan in this regard to help players avoid potential match fixers, a PCB official, who declined to be named, told AP news agency.

The ICC banned Pakistani players Mohammad Asif, Mohammad Amir and former captain Salman Butt after their involvement in spot-fixing scandal during Pakistan’s last tour of England in 2010.

The eight-nation Champions Trophy will be held in England between June 6 and 23.

Pakistan are in group B, along with archrivals India, South Africa and West Indies. The group A is comprised of Australia, England, New Zealand and Sri Lanka.
Four more bowlers have been selected on the third day of trials in Islamabad and Karachi by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), in collaboration with Ufone, to hunt fast-bowling talent from across the country.

The officials selected Nasir Malik and Akhtar Ayub from Islamabad with top speeds of 138 kph and 137 kph and Abdul Ameer and Muhammad Imran Khan from Karachi with top speed of 132 kph.

Under the programme “King of Speed”, the board is seeking for bowlers who can bowl with a speed of 145 kph (90 mph) or more.

Six bowlers were earlier selected from Faisalabad, Multan and Garhi Khuda Bakhsh.

In Faisalabad, trials were held on Sunday where scores of candidates showed their talents. Two lucky ones, Faisal Rana and Rana Adil, were selected.

In the round one, 20 bowlers will be selected from 10 cities (two from each city), who will then join round two. After round two, three pacers selected via wild card entry will join Pakistan bowling great Wasim Akram in the final round to be held the National Stadium of Karachi.

The trials began from Multan and Garhi Khuda Bakhsh on Saturday, where Atta Ullah, Amir Yamin, Wajid Ali and Mahfooz Ahmed were selected.

The “King of Speed” trials are set to take place in Peshawar (April 16), Quetta and Abbottabad (April 17), Mirpur (April 18) and Lahore (April 20) as well.

The organisers will give away a grand prize of Rs1 million to the bowler who achieves the fastest speed over 145 kph. And in case of more than one winners, the amount will be equally shared.

Pakistan bowling great Wasim Akram will also be helping the PCB to unearth the obscure talent in the country as he is not coaching the Kolkata Knight Riders in this season of the IPL.

Pakistan’s fast bowlers once dominated the international cricket and the team was famous for their production line of quicks.

But the country has been lacking quality pacers for quite a while, prompting PCB’s chief selector Iqbal Qasim to say last month that if serious efforts were not made, Pakistan might not get quality pacers.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed that Grant Flower is one of the candidates it is considering to appoint as the team’s batting coach.

The 42-year-old Grant, younger brother of England head coach Andy Flower, is currently coaching Zimbabwe’s batsmen and his contract is going to end in August, ESPNcricinfo reported.

As Zimbabwe Cricket is not clear about whether they would reappoint Grant when his contract ends, he has emerged as a strong candidate to fulfil the role in Pakistani team.

But the PCB has made it clear that it may appoint a batting coach before the end of Grant’s tenure in August.

Several former Pakistani cricketers, including Zaheer Abbas and Saleem Malik also showed their interest to fulfil the position when the PCB published its advertisement last year, but the board was searching for a candidate accredited with at least Level 3 coaching and had five-year experience rubbing shoulders with top players.

The news of the PCB mulling over to appoint Grant as a batting coach had mixed reaction from critics. On the one hand, there are experts who poured scorn on the idea of considering Grant when Pakistan itself has experienced cricketers like Javed Miandad, Zaheer Abbas, Saeed Anwar, Inzamam-ul-Haq to name few.

Some saw Grant unfit for the job as they thought he himself was ordinary during his career and, according to them, the PCB considering him means it had run out of options. Meanwhile, Grant’s appointment would also bring disappointment for those who are against the induction of another foreign coach in the team as Pakistan have already two of them – Dav Whatmore (head coach) and Julian Fountain (fielding coach).

On the other hand, analysts in support of Grant opined that former national players as coach tried to manipulate team members which culminated in division among the players. To them, foreign coaches were more neutral, so Grant would be the best option. They also rejected the impression that Grant was ordinary and gave example of his brother, Andy, who is the head coach of a team like England.

Another reason Grant’s supporters give is that domestic coaches often failed in matches outside Pakistan because of their lack of know-how about the foreign pitches, and given Pakistan’s recent performance in South Africa, Grant is the right one to fulfil the role.

Grant has been coaching Zimbabwe’s batsmen since October 2010. During his career as a cricketer himself, he was capped 221 one-dayers and 67 Tests.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced a schedule for trials to seek out fast bowlers from across the country.

Under the programme, known as the “King of Speed”, the PCB, with the collaboration of cellular company Ufone, will hunt for bowlers who can bowl with a speed of 145 kph (90 mph).

Pakistan’s fast bowlers once dominated the international cricket and the team was famous for their production line of pacers.

But the country has been lacking quality pacers for quite a while, prompting PCB’s chief selector Iqbal Qasim to say last month that if serious efforts were not made, Pakistan might not get quality pacers.

“The King of Speed camps will be set up in ten cities across Pakistan from 13th to 21st April and the trials will be held in two phases,” a PCB release said.

The trials will start from Garhi Khuda Bakhsh and Multan and will be held in Faisalabad (April 14), Islamabad (April 15), Peshawar (April 16), Quetta, Abbottabad (April 17), Mirpur (April 18), Lahore (April 20).

The PCB, with the help of its sponsors, will also award a grand prize of Rs1 million to the bowler who achieves the fastest speed over 145 kph. And in case of more than one winners, the amount will be equally shared.

Pakistan bowling great Wasim Akram will also be helping the PCB to unearth the obscure talent in the country as he is not coaching the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL this season.

Wasim has also agreed to help current bowlers in the national team before the eight-nation ICC Champions Trophy, scheduled to be held in England from June 6-23.

At a time when most of the international players are having their bread buttered on both sides, Pakistani players are among the poorest of the players in the world. They do not get big money from the board nor do they get a chance to play in the Indian Premier League due to the tense relations between Pakistan and India, although they are better than many players in the world. Many less talented cricketers are making hay while the sun is shining on them. Due to this reason, national players want to raise their voice in demand of better central contracts and match fees and for that they have decided to form a ‘Pakistani Cricketers Association’.

[caption id="attachment_280" align="alignright" width="300"]Match fees of players were last increased in Ejaz Butt’s tenure (Photo: Getty Images) Match fees of players were last increased in Ejaz Butt’s tenure (Photo: Getty Images)[/caption]

The Pakistan Cricket Board is about to announce new central contracts in a few days and there are not good tidings for players. Players are not happy in not having an increment in the upcoming new central contracts and have decided to have a joint stand to pressurise the board. Sources say that they are encouraged by a former captain of the national side.

A player, on condition of anonymity, has told Cricnama that they would soon announce the formation of Pakistani Cricketers Association. He further added, “We do not want to fail this time because such efforts have been made during the tenure of Wasim Akram and then Younis Khan’s captaincy but none of these captains had the support of sincere companions, while we are guided by a former Test Captain who has been trying to gather all players on a platform and has good terms with senior players.”

Another senior player has confirmed that the players have been trying to make such association saying “...regarding this some players have talked with me and tried to convince me that by establishing this association they can raise voice for their rights, about central contract and match fees in particular”.

The movers and shakers of this proposed association have even contacted politicians to seek their help in this regard. Players’ power is already a big factor in Pakistan cricket and if they succeed in forming a strong platform they can easily make the board concede to their demands. Sources from the PCB say that the announcement of central contract is being delayed as few senior players want a 100 percent rise in the contract’s amount while the board is not accepting this demand.

It was during Ejaz Butt’s term in office, when the Pakistan Cricket Board last made a rise in players’ match fee and now players want that increment again so that some compensation can be done for the restrictions they have been facing at international level.
