Dav Whatmore is unlikely to continue as Pakistan coach after the recent defeats against South Africa, and the team manager Moin Khan seems set to replace him.


Moin Khan is participating in the training sessions and working in all three departments – batting, bowling and fielding – more actively than Whatmore.

It seems the ‘opportunist’ players know what is going to happen, therefore, they have ditched Whatmore and are trying to appease Moin.

Team sources say that in team meeting and training sessions Moin Khan is spending more time with players and senior player are co-operating with him as much as they can.

Although Najam Sethi is busy in dealing court issues, some team players know Moin is Sethi’s favourite and his vote would be a key to run team’s affairs in the near future.

After one-and-a-half-year unsuccessful stint as Pakistan coach, Dav Whatmore seems to lose his position. Seniors players are also aware of this as change in their attitudes is evident.

After losing Test series against South Africa, Pakistan failed to win the series even against Zimbabwe. This is why Whatmore has lost sympathies of his ardent supporters, but also of team players.

According to sources in the know, now Whatmore is not taken seriously in team meetings and even ridiculed sometimes. The reason is the PCB is now favouring seniors and ignoring the coach.

The sources said Saeed Ajmal’s recent statement, after which he had to apologise, was because of the environment created by the seniors.

It is about sure that the board is no more interested to retain Whatmore as coach. And if Pakistan failed to win against South Africa, then chances are high that he would be removed before time.

Pakistan whitewashed then world number one England in a Test series earlier in 2012 and it seemed that now Pakistan were on the right track. It was a good sign too that a few months before that victory Pakistan were under the burden of spot-fixing scandal and then suddenly the same team outshone the world's top team. This scandal was a blessing in disguise as Pakistan did not lose a single Test series after that until a foreign coach Dav Whatmore came and since then Pakistan have not won a single Test series.

There has not been much changes to the team that 'greenwashed' team England. The same Misbahul Haq was the captain; the same Mohammad Hafeez was the vice captain, the same Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq, the same Saeed Ajmal, Junaid Khan, and Abdur Rehman. If there has been a change it is coach. Mohsin Khan was the head coach back then. However, even after the historic success, Moshin was sacked and Australian Dav Whatmore was appointed as the new coach.

As coach first major assignment of Dav Whatmore was the tour of Sri Lanka where Pakistan had chance to become world number two in case of victory. It was not such a difficult task. In addition, with a high morale of the team and after beating world number one, dealing with Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka was not a bit easier. However, Whatmore failed to utilise the players and Pakistan lost the series 1-0. After that, earlier this year Pakistan had to face South Africa that ended up as a nightmare of 3-0 defeat including the lowest innings total in the history of team Pakistan: a mere 49 runs.

Now with Zimbabwe series there was chance that Pakistan will get back on right track but the way Pakistan remained on the backfoot for three days in first test was a sign of disaster. And the icing on this cake of embarrassment was defeat in the second Test at the hands of a team that does not even belong to world rankings. Eventually, Pakistan slipped to number six in world rankings from four.

In short, since Whatmore became Pakistan's coach in March 2012, the team has won only one Test in eight. And it did not win a single Test series.

When Dav Whatmore joined, there were chances that Pakistan could capitalise the momentum and jump to top rankings from number five. However, Pakistan failed in first expedition against Sri Lanka and kept falling after that. Winners of straight seven Test series started losing after Whatmore's inclusion, and then continued losing. Why?

Today Pakistan cricket is at new lows and now this is a valid question that what fruit has a heavily paid coach brought to the team? Whatmore has to answer the question otherwise the upcoming Test series against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka could be last for him.

Pakistan’s Test and ODI captain Misbah-ul-Haq has said that recent tour of South Africa has made Pakistan mentally stronger and it would help the team acclimatize to difficult conditions during the Champions Trophy in England starting June 6.

Although Pakistan lost both Test and ODI series against South Africa, Misbah believes the experience of playing against the stronger opponents like South Africa would pay off in the next month’s event.

“Having played in the tougher conditions in South Africa, our players are more focused for difficult conditions in the coming event,” Misbah said.

A six-day training camp held in the cool weather of Abbottabad, located at an altitude of 1260m, ended on Wednesday.

The players will again gather on Monday in Lahore to leave for Scotland where they are set to play two ODIs. The team will also play two one-dayers against Ireland before the Champions Trophy.

Pakistan are in Group B of the Champions Trophy and will take on West Indies on June 7, before playing South Africa and archrivals India on June 10 and June 15, respectively.

The Group A includes the hosts England, defending champions Australia, Sri Lanka and New Zealand.

Misbah said the cooler conditions in Abbottabad helped the team members to get used to the English conditions.

Talking about the axing of experienced Younis Khan and Shahid Afridi, Misbah said it is not easy to play without senior players but such tough decisions had to be taken.

He said Pakistan still have many match-winning players in the team.

Pakistan coach Dav Whatmore said it was difficult to predict the team’s chances in the upcoming event. However, he said the players had the potential to pressure any team if they play to the best of their ability.

When Waqar Younis left Pakistani team high and dry, the first test of the new leadership of Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Zaka Ashraf was to arrange a suitable coach for Pakistan. They needed a coach who could guide them further on the path of victories. After their efforts for many months, at last Pakistan have appointed the renowned coach Dav Whatmore for a two-year contract. Getting fame for coaching Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, Dav Whatmore belongs to Australia. He has been a candidate for Pakistan’s coaching post in the past but board selected Geoff Lawson back then. Things turned out in his favour this time and despite Mohsin Khan’s success and efforts he was able to get this post.

Younis thinks that after the appointment of two foreign coaches, bowling coach should also be appointed on Whatmore’s recommendation.

Whatmore’s predecessor Younis, who had resigned from coaching due to personal reasons, has called it a good decision. After Waqar’s departure, board appointed Mohsin Khan as the interim coach and constituted a three-member committee for selection of coach. On this committee’s recommendations Whatmore was selected for this job last week. Talking with the famous cricket website Pak Passion, he said that Whatmore’s experience in coaching the teams of sub-continent made him the most suitable candidate for this position and after coaching Sri Lanka and Bangladesh he has taken the most difficult job in the cricket world – coaching Pakistan.

Waqar Younis, who grabbed 789 wickets in his international career, has a positive opinion about Dav Whatmore. He believes that besides having achievements like 1996 World Cup victory for Sri Lanka and Bangladesh’s first ever Test triumph on his resume, Whatmore understands the sub-continental culture and has a Sri Lankan background too. He expects Whatmore to deliver. However, Whatmore, in his opinion, is strict in his behaviour and likes hard work, and under him things won’t be easy for players. Younis thinks that the players now want to learn and work hard and some of them worked tirelessly under his coaching. He believes that players are now looking forward to work with Whatmore and progress as a team.

Younis is not interested in the position of bowling coach, lying vacant after Aqib Javed’s resignation. “I left the role of head coach at the PCB due to personal reasons and I don’t see myself working as the bowling coach at the moment. No, I’m not really interested in the role at the moment” he said. Javed has now taken up the responsibility of UAE’s coach.

Besides head coach, Pakistan have appointed another foreigner as a fielding coach, Julian Fountain, arising debate whether the new bowling coach would also be a foreigner. Regarding this Waqar says “…it’s extremely important that Dav’s input is taken into account by the PCB. Whoever is brought in as the bowling coach should be on Whatmore’s recommendation”.

Under Whatmore, Pakistan’s first Test begins from March 11 in Asia Cup where Pakistan would face Bangladesh in the opening contest. Pakistan would also face the in-form Sri Lanka and the world champions and archrivals India in the championship.
