News about differences between Pakistan ODI captain Misbah-ul-Haq and T20 captain Mohammad Hafeez have been in the media for quite a while. However, the ‘rivalry’ between the two materialised when the players came to face-to-face by a twist of fate in Caribbean Premier League 2013 match. Misbah, playing for St Lucia Zouks, gave Guyana Amazon Warriors’ Hafeez a bashing, guiding his team to win in the last over.

When St Lucia needed 10 runs to win in the last over, Misbah missed the first ball delivered by the ‘professor’. But he smashed the next two balls into the stand, helping St Lucia grab a 5-wicket victory. Misbah’s form that was witnessed during the ODI series against West Indies is continuing.

Guyana Amazon scored 126 runs in the first innings at the loss of 6 wickets. Hafeez’s share in the total was 13. Opener Lendl Simmons and Christopher Barnwell were the leading scorers for the team with 38 and 29 runs.

Shane Shillingford took three wickets for Zouks.

St Lucia chased the target in the third ball of the last over, thanks to Pakistan skipper’s 49 off 33. His innings included 4 sixes, an aspect generally not expected from Misbah.

Apart from Misbah, Andre Fletcher scored, 23; Devon Smith, 24; while Darren Sammy smashed quick and valuable 21 off 9.

Misbah was declared man of the match for his fireworks.

With the beginning of Caribbean Premier League (CPL), Pakistani players have also started to make their presence felt. Last night, three Pakistani players showed their game during the opening match of the CPL between Barbados Tridents and St Lucia Zouks. Captain of Barbados Tridents Kieron Pollard won the toss and elected to bat first.

Kieron Pollard had two Pakistanis in his team, Shoaib Malik and Umer Akmal. Barbados lost earlier two wickets at the score of 30 when Dwayne Smith got out on zero and Jonathon Carter got out after scoring 11. At this time Malik started his innings. Though on the other end the team lost Shakib Al Hasan (5) and Umer Akmal (0) one after the other, Pollard and Malik managed to carve out a partnership of 88 runs. The welcome partnership came at a time when half of the batting line was out on just 48. Malik scored 78 off 51, including 3 sixes, and Pollard remained not out on 61 off 46 with 3 sixes and 4 fours. Barbados Tridents set the target of 170, the captain of St Lucia Zouks Darren Sammy took two wickets.

Tamim Iqbal of Bangladesh and Andre Fletcher gave a decent beginning to St Lucia Zouks’ innings with an opening stand of 57 runs. Iqbal was dismissed , scoring 22 off 14. His departure is followed by Herschelle Gibbs (7) and Devon Smith (9). Fletcher got out after scoring 57 runs, and the prolific bat of Pakistan's captain Misbah-ul-Haq could make only 12. Situation got worse when four batsmen Albie Morkel, Shane Shillingford, Garey Mathurin, and Tino Best were out for a duck.

Whole team got all out in the last over at 152 and the hard hitting 35 runs of Captain Sammy ended useless. He scored these runs with the help of 4 fours and 2 sixes.  Pollard took 3 wickets for his team.

For his all round performance of 78 runs and one wicket Shoaib Malik was declared player of the match.

The next match of CPL will be played today between Muhammad Hafeez’s Guyana Amazon Warriors and Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel under the leadership of Darren Bravo.
Pakistan beat West Indies in the second Twenty20 to not only clinch the two-match series but also grabbed second position in T20 international rankings.

Today’s win was completely because of bowlers, who, defending a target of just 136 runs, had ruined West Indies batting line-up at the very outset. The dismissals of Johnson Charles, Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels in the second, third and fourth overs broke the backbone of the hosts. Dwayne Bravo, along with Sunil Narine, tried to come back in the game, but Pakistani bowlers were overwhelming.

Sammy’s decision to send Narine before Kieron Pollard was a bit surprising, though the spinner made 28 off 16 to fend off possible criticism on the captain. There was only a single occasion, albeit quite brief, in the West Indies innings when they seemed to make a comeback in the match. It was when Pollard smashed two sixes and two fours to rookie Zulfiqar Babar in the 17th over. But the bowler perished Pollard on the fifth ball, and Bravo on the next ball to salvage the loss. Darren Sammy could also do nothing and the hosts managed to make 124 for 9 in 20 overs. So it was an 11-run victory for the tourists.

Sohail Tanvir, who was given chance in place of Mohammad Irfan, bowled well, claiming 2 wickets for 20 runs in 4 overs. Saeed Ajmal took 2 wickets in 4 overs and conceded 21 runs. Babar’s two wickets came in a single over in which he gave 20 runs. Captain Mohammad Hafeez gave just 9 runs in 4 overs and also took the biggest wicket of Gayle.

Pakistan’s innings was opened by Mohammad Hafeez and Ahmed Shehzad as Nasir Jamshed had been ruled out in the match. Hafeez played the same shot to Samuel Badree which cost him his wicket in the first match. Skipper’s loss on 24 was followed by the dismissals of Umar Amin and Haris Sohail and Pakistan were 42 for 3 in 8 overs. Shehzad and Umar Akmal played their parts at the stage. Although Shehzad was dismissed in the 13th over and could not make his half-century, his share of 44 runs proved fruitful for the team in the low-scorer.

Umar helped Pakistan reach a defendable total of 135, although no batsman could stay with him at the crease. Shahid Afridi (6), Hammad Azam (1) and Sohail Tanvir (0) were dismissed in the space of just 13 runs, but Umar’s bat continued scoring runs. He remained unbeaten making 46 off 36. His innings included a six and three fours.

Sunil Narine took three wickets for 26 runs and Badree took two. Sammy and Pollard took once wicket apiece.

Umar Akmal was given the player-of-the-match award and Zulfiqar Babar was declared the player of the series for his five wickets and valuable runs in the first match.

The first Twenty20 between Pakistan and West Indies culminated in a two-wicket victory for the tourists after sensational two innings. The match played in Arnos Vale Grounds saw many ups and downs for both teams. After Pakistan took an excellent start by taking early wickets, Kieron Pollard, Marlon Samuels, Dwayne Bravo and Darren Sammy turned the tables on the greens shirts. Pakistan did the same. As the hosts ruined the initial batting line-up of Pakistan, Shahid Afridi and Umar Amin took the team back n to the game. However, it was the four and the six in the last over of the match by the debutant Zulfiqar Babar that earned the win for Pakistan.

[caption id="attachment_1945" align="alignright" width="248"]It was the day for debutant Zulfiqar Babar: three wickets, an unbelievable catch and then four and a six in the last over (Photo: WICB) It was the day for debutant Zulfiqar Babar: three wickets, an unbelievable catch and then four and a six in the last over (Photo: WICB)[/caption]

Pakistan seemed to be chasing the target easily as they needed another 16 runs in 2 overs and Afridi’s bat had been prolific from the beginning. He smashed a four to Shannon Gabriel to fine leg, and the tourists were now a few balls away from the win. But Afridi lost his wicket in an attempt to hit a six at the time when it was the least needed. Pakistan’s win was now once again uncertain.

As the greens shirts needed 6 runs in the last over, Zulfiqar Babar carved out an unexpected boundary. Now Pakistan needed 2 runs for 5 balls. But Samuels did not seem to let it go too easily. The next two balls were bowled. Pakistan needed 2 for 4. Then 2 for 3. “Are we heading to another tie?” fans of the both sides were thinking. The scores leveled on the next ball. But Saeed Ajmal got run out on the second last ball, and now the tourists needed 1 for 1. Babar was facing Samuels. As everyone was thinking how could the debutant earn a run for the team, Babar left all and sundry astonished by hitting a six. Phew! Pakistan had won the match.

Earlier in the innings Pakistan did not get off well as they started chasing a target of 153 runs. Nasir Jamshed and Ahmed Shehzad had left the ground on just 10 runs. Though Pakistan maintained the run rate, but the batsmen were failing to stay at the crease. Mohammad Hafeez lost his wicket in the fifth over to Sunil Narine when he tried to hit the ball after smashing two fours.

Umar Amin was playing superbly on the other end. He hit three fours to Gabriel as he came to the crease, and then four fours to Samuel Badree. Umar Akmal once again fell prey to his adventurism. Sammy’s throw ended his innings. Pakistan were 77 for 4. But what happened next was a nightmare for the tourists. Amin was dismissed in the 12th over after scoring 47 runs in 34 balls. Now Shahid Afridi and Hammad Azam were the last pair who could save the day for the team.

When Azam lost his wicket, it was all up to the Boom Boom. The innings was Afridi, who had started his batting with a six, deserved to reach 50, but he adapted to his conventional style in the 19th over, and it cost him his wicket.

West Indies thought it was done. But Babar was at the crease to perform miracles for the team. His four and six in the last over helped the team seal victory.

Gabriel took three wicket for the team, whereas Badree, Narine and Samuels took one each.

Earlier, West Indies start was not different from the opponents. Hafeez and Babar dismissed initial four batsmen on just 42 runs. But later when Junaid Khan and Mohammad Irfan were conceding runs, Hafeez did not dare take the ball in his hands. Kieron Pollard remained unbeaten on 49 off 36 while Darren Sammy scored 30 off 14. Marlon Samuels and Dwayne Bravo scored 25 runs apiece.

Pakistan’s bowling in the end was a complete shambles. West Indies made 86 runs in the last 10 overs, including 55 runs in the last 5.

Babar bowled well in his first match of his career. He took three wickets – Marlon Samuels, Lendl Simmons and Dwayne Bravo.

Afridi was given man of the match for his 46, but he said Babar deserved the title, and perhaps rightly so.

The second T20 will be played tomorrow (Sunday).

Pakistan beat West Indies by four wickets after an exciting game, winning the five-match series 3-1. The most important aspect of the match was that Pakistan decided to bowl after winning the toss, and chased a target of 243 runs successfully. In the final moments, where on the one hand fours and sixes by Umar Akmal and Shahid Afridi made it easier for the team to head to victory, on the other, Misbah’s dismissal raised the chances of another tie. However, a missed throw by Kieron Pollard helped Pakistan take a run and win the match and the series as well.

Ahmed Shehzad and Nasir Jamshed gave Pakistan an opening stand if 51 runs – first time Pakistani openers crossed 50 runs. Especially, Shehzad played well by scoring 64 runs. Although he took 100 balls to score that much, such innings was the need of the time.

When Haris Sohail was dismissed in the batting powerplay, Pakistan needed another 83 runs in 12 overs, with Umar and Misbah left at the crease. Both played responsibly and turned only those balls to boundaries that deserved to be hit. Umar started batting aggressively from the 41st over by hitting three fours to Jason Holder to lessen the required run rate.

As Pakistan were nearing the target, a moment came that was later regarded by West Indies captain Dwayne Bravo as decisive for he result of the match. A delivery by Tino Best seemed to have touched Misbah’s gloves was caught behind. But field umpire Paul Reiffel declared him not out. The host took the review, but with no Hot Spot available the decision went in favour of Misbah.

The decision helped Misbah complete his 29th ODI half-century. It was his fourth century in the five matches of the series. Presently, he is the top run scorer of 2013. It reflects his consistency as a batsman.

Pakistan run rate dropped after that until Umar hit a six to Dwayne Bravo and back-to-back six and four to Tino Best to make the matter easier for Pakistan. But Umar tired to hit yet another ball which cost him his wicket. As Umar’s shot landed safely in the hands Kemar Roach (substitute), rain started pouring in. Before the dismissal Pakistan was 10 runs ahead of the Duckworth-Lewis par score. Pakistan got tense for some moments, and rightly so. Because nobody knew the revised D/L par score. But after a brief pause, the scoreboard showed that the tourists were still 5 runs ahead of the target, means Pakistan were still the winners if the match had ended at the moment.

When the match resumed after 2o minutes, Misbah was accompanied with Shahid Afridi. West Indies set the same fielding for Afridi as they had done in the previous game, that is to lure Boom Boom to play a shot by offering him short ball so that he was caught near the boundary. But Afridi came prepared this time. He smashed a six to Dwayne Bravo on a similar delivery. He scored a four at the point in the same over to reduce the chase to just a few runs. But when the score levelled, Misbah lost his wicket in trying to play the winning shot. Saeed Ajmal, the next batsman in, only managed to take a risky single on the second last ball of the match after having missed two balls.

The builder of Pakistan’s victory, Misbah, scored 63 runs off 93 balls. He scored one six and five fours.

Tino Best was the top wicket-taker for West Indies with three wickets, while Jason Holder and Dasrren Sammy took one wicket apiece.

Earlier, West Indies made 242 runs after Pakistan put them into bat. Their innings was built up on the efforts of Johnson Charles, Marlon Samuels and captain Dwayne Bravo. The team’s strike rate remained low throughout the innings until Bravo and Sammy came and captivated the spectators by their stormy knocks. Bravo scored 48 off just 27 while Sammy made 29 off 18. The partnership between the duo was 53 off 27.

Junaid Khan took three wickets while Mohammad Irfan and Ajmal took two each.

After a poor performance in the Champions Trophy, the victory was a must for Pakistan, and this was a golden chance for the team. West Indies have never one an ODI series against since 1988 and Pakistan have been winning ODI series against them since 1993.

Now both teams are scheduled to play two Twenty20s. The first T20 will be played on July 27.

Pakistan unexpectedly beat West Indies by 6 wickets to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. The builders of the victory were Misbah-ul-Haq, Mohammad Hafeez and Umar Akmal, who helped Pakistan chased a target after a long time.

[caption id="attachment_1917" align="alignright" width="300"]As the match resumed after rain, Mohammad Hafeez turned the tables (Photo: AFP) As the match resumed after rain, Mohammad Hafeez turned the tables (Photo: AFP)[/caption]

The 4th ODI in the St Lucia was a surprising match for Pakistan from every aspect. Having chosen to bowl after winning the toss, Pakistan were facing a big target as West Indian batsmen, especially Marlon Samuels, took their team by storm. Moreover, Pakistan’s sloppy fielding also made matter worse for the. But Pakistan managed to save the day, at last.

After the disappointing performance on the last ODI, when Pakistan started chasing the target of 262 runs, their chances of winning were scarce. As Pakistan lost both their openers on 60, the batsmen who were did not seem to make runs at the required run rate of more than 8.5. Rain ruined about an hour’s game after 17 overs. And when the match resumed, the revised target for Pakistan was 189 runs in 31 overs.

Hafeez’s inning of 59 off 62 made the chase easier. The way he scored 32 runs in two overs and hit two sixes to Jason Holder turned the tables on Wets Indies. Later Misbah’s 53 off 43 and Umar Akmal’s 19 off 18 led Pakistan to their destination. Umar’s three back-to-back fours to Dwayne Bravo in the 30th over ended the game an over before.

[caption id="attachment_1918" align="alignright" width="210"]Marlon Samuels’ outstanding century went in vain (Photo: AFP) Marlon Samuels’ outstanding century went in vain (Photo: AFP)[/caption]

Pakistan’s bowling, however, was not up to the mark. Samuels’ hundred was a blow to the confidence of the tourist bowlers. His brilliant knock helped West Indies amass the biggest total of the series. The most disappointing thing for Pakistan was that they opted to bowl after winning the toss as it was equal to undermining the team’s confidence, particularly after the bowlers’ bad performance in the last match. Wahab Riaz was once again out of form and gave 42 run sin 6 overs, whereas Shahid Afridi gave 41 runs in as much overs. Samuels remained unbeaten after a smashing knock of 106 off 104 which included a six on the last ball of the innings.

It’s a fact that batting was the catalyst for Pakistan, because bowling and filed did enough to get the match off the tourists’ hands. As compared to the previous match, Pakistan today dropped a catch and missed a stump, too.

Although Pakistan weaknesses have been concealed beneath the thin layer of the victory, the team needs to win the series 3-1, and does not take it for granted to level the 2-2. The fifth and the last one-dayer will be played in the same ground on July 24.

One, only one bad over deprived Pakistan of victory in a match that remained in their grasp for most of the time. The bowling of Wahab Riaz in the last over was reminiscent of Mohammad Sami’s as the last two batsmen of West Indies scored 14 runs in the over, tying the third ODI played in St Lucia. So the series is still 1-1.

[caption id="attachment_1907" align="alignright" width="300"]Even such a bowling couldn’t save the day for Pakistan (Photo: WICB) Even such a bowling couldn’t save the day for Pakistan (Photo: WICB)[/caption]

Chasing a 230-run target, Pakistan took a firm grip on the match from the beginning, taking three key wickets of Johnson Charles, Darren Bravo and Chris Gayle before 50 runs. Marlon Samuels and Lendl Simmons did nothing but saved the wicket in the next 22 overs, adding just 91 runs. Samuels was dismissed in the batting powerplay after scoring 46 runs on a hefty 106 balls. He was to blame had West Indies lost the match. After his departure, West Indies tried to come back in the game, thanks to Simmons. Pakistan would have lost the grasp on the match, had Saeed Ajmal not dismissed Simmons and aggressive Dwayne Bravo in a single over. Kieron Pollard and Darren Sammy gave away their wickets to Junaid Khan in the next over, and the game was almost slipped off the hands of the hosts as they need another 39 runs to win in three overs with two wickets remaining.

When Sunil Narine lost his wicket after hitting a six and two fours to Ajmal in the 48th over, West Indies were hinging on the last wicket. The last over stated with Kemar Roach and Jason Holder standing on the wicket and the hosts needing 15 runs to claim victory. The ball was given to Riaz and he did what Sami had done recently against Sri Lanka. Failing to deliver a single ball at the target, he was hit a six and a four and on the last ball, when three more runs were required to win, the batsmen scored two runs and the match ended in a draw.

Umar Akmal missed a chance to run out and the hosts succeeded to take a couple of runs. Although the match was a tie, it should be considered a defeat for the tourists as the West Indian themselves found it difficult to believe that they had restricted Pakistan from winning.

Holder scored 19 off just 9, hitting a six and a four. Simmons was the top-scorer for West Indies and also shared the man-of-the-match award. He faced 86 balls during his innings, which included two 6s and seven 4s.

Junaid and Ajmal took three wicket apiece, Mohammad Irfan took two, whereas Riaz took just one wicket and proved the most expensive with 63 runs in 10 overs.

Ironically, Pakistan were denied a run in the final moments of the first innings when Akmal played a shot and took a double. Umpire said it was short run and deducted one run. Replay, however, showed that it was not. So that “one run” snatched victory from Pakistan.

Earlier, the tourists put West Indies into bat after winning the toss. Pakistan had replaced Haris Sohail and Junaid Khan with Asad Shafique and Asad Ali. After a 39-run opening stand, both openers lost their wickets successively. Mohammad Hafeez and Misbah-ul-Haq added 53 runs on the third wicket but Hafeez’s dismissal lessened the team’s chances of making a big total. Debutant Sohail did his best and scored 26 runs in a 60-run partnership with Misbah.

Pakistan get a blow by the back-to-back dismissals of Misbah and Shahid Afridi. The captain was clean bowled by Dwayne Bravo after scoring 75 off 112. Shahid Afridi, who was back in his old form after his fireworks in the first ODI, lost his wicket on just 1 run.

[caption id="attachment_1908" align="alignright" width="294"]Umar Akmal remained the “side hero” of the match: heroic batting, short run and failing to run out on the last ball (Photo: AFP) Umar Akmal remained the “side hero” of the match: heroic batting, short run and failing to run out on the last ball (Photo: AFP)[/caption]

Umar and Riaz added 52 runs on just 25 balls in the end to help Pakistan amass a total of 229 runs. Umar scored 40 off 31.

However, the target was not enough on the wicket. It was Pakistani bowlers, except Riaz, who led the match to such a close position.

Holder and Dwayne Bravo took two wickets apiece, and each of Roach and Sammy took one. Misbah and Simmons shared the man-of-the-match award on scoring 75 runs each.

The fourth and important one-dayer is now played at the same venue in July 21. The team that wins will get an unassailable lead in the series.
Victory hides many weaknesses. Pakistan won the first ODI because of Shahid Afridi’s outstanding performance that covered many faults of the team. But today’s game of the five-match OSI series proved that it was a one-off incident. The hosts won by 37 runs, levelling the series 1-1.

The team lost mainly because of the batsmen, once again. Pakistan’s start was quite slow against the backdrop of a 233-run target. The required run rate was touching five in the initial 10 overs. And when they tried to put their bats in motion, wicket started falling successively. Ahmed Shehzad was caught behind in the 11th over when the total was just 37. The performance of Mohammad Hafeez, who still owes a good innings to fans, was once again disappointing. He could score only 20 runs.

Nasir Jamshed was enjoying a lucky day on the other end as he got four chances in his innings. But still he made 54 runs on 93 balls. Had there been other youngster, he could have scored a century. But Jamshed not only failed to speed up his strike rate but lost his wicket at a crucial stage, leaving the team in tatters.

The biggest blow for Pakistan came in the 29th over when Misbah-ul-Haq was sent to pavilion. Misbah belongs to that school of thought according to which being dismissed is a bigger sin than not scoring runs. But the way he was clean bowled by Darren Sammy didn’t suit him. When he returned to the dressing room after scoring just 17 off 41, the team was completely relying on young players. But Asad Shafiq and Jamshed lost back-to-back wickets. Shahid Afridi offered his wicket to the opponents in the last over of the powerplay to confirm Pakistan’s failure. Despite having failed to hit Sunil Narine’s two balls, he tried the third one. Result? Wicket-keeper’s swiftness and stump.

Before entering the last 10 overs, Pakistan had lost 6 wickets on 151, with Umar Akmal left as the only genuine batsman. West Indies started hammering the last nails in Pakistan’s coffin, and even a glimmer of hope faded away with Umar’s dismissal in the 48th over. He scored 50 off 46, hitting five fours and one six. Pakistan were all-out on 195 with 13 balls left.

Narine was the key bowler for the hosts. He gave only 26 runs in 10 overs, taking four crucial wickets. Dwyane Bravo took two, whereas Kemar Roach, Kieron Pollard, Darren Sammy and Marlon Samuels took one wicket apiece.

Although West Indies won the match, the bane of their performance was the fielding. If they did not improve in this department, they would be in trouble in the upcoming matches.

Earlier, the hosts’ start was not that good either as they lost Chris Gayle to Mohammad Irfan in the first over. However, Johnson Charles and Darren Bravo added 79 runs in the second wicket, providing a strong base to the team, while also recovering Gayle’s loss.

Pakistan tried to limit West Indies to a low score by dismissing Samuels and Lendl Simmons, but a 70-run partnership between skipper Dwayne Bravo and Pollard ruined the tourists’ plans. Pollard lost his wicket to Asad Ali, making 30 off 27 and Bravo remained unbeaten with 43 off 52. This helped West Indies set a 233-run target.

Pakistani bowlers gave as much in extras as their batsmen failed to make to claim victory. With 21 wides and one no-ball, the team’s extras amounted to 38.

Narine was given the man-of-the-match award.

Both teams will play the third one-dayer on July 19 at Gros Islet.
“He came, he saw, he conquered.” The saying might have been coined for cricket king Shahid Afridi. When ‘Lala’ was recalled after he was ruled out in the 2013 Champions Trophy, he played an innings that can undoubtedly be regarded as one of the best all-round innings of the game’s history. Seventy-six runs off 55 and balls and seven wickets for 12 runs. He broke several records in one match.

[caption id="attachment_1888" align="alignright" width="262"]Pakistan’s start was like this. Three batsmen was dismissed his way. (Photo: WICB) Pakistan’s start was like this. Three batsmen was dismissed his way. (Photo: WICB)[/caption]

Afridi played an innings so superb that it dampened the enthusiasm of Trent Bridge Test, which is being termed as one of best Tests ever as England beat Australia by a narrow margin of just 14 runs.

Pakistan once again lost the toss at Providence, Guyana, and were put into bat. As the innings started, Jason Holder shattered Pakistan’s top-order. It was the time when maybe most Pakistanis were turning off the TVs.

Holder bowled so skilfully that Pakistan’s first three batsmen got bowled on the balls which they were trying to leave. Ahmed Shehzad and Mohammad Hafeez were clean bowled, and Nasir Jamshed was given lbw. Although it was result of bad umpiring but Pakistan got a blow. Asad Shafiq was caught behind the wickets, whereas Umar Akmal’s adventurous force of habit cost him his wicket. Now Pakistan were 47 for five. Another horrific performance!

Now two most senior members of the team were at the crease – Misbah-ul-Haq and Shahid Afridi. The need of the time was to stay at the wicket and play the next 30 overs, but Afridi had already written his script. The third ball he played was six – and it was just the start.

West Indian bowlers who had seemed impregnable implode in from of the Boom Boom. He scored 76 off 55, which included five sixes and six fours. Misbah batted in his usual way and having scored 52 off 121, he was caught behind in the 48th over.

Pakistan’s score was 224 for nine in 50 overs. It was a better score against the backdrop of team’s performance in the Champions Trophy, where it could not even reach 200 runs and were all-out in all matches. But still the score was not defendable – or so it seemed.

Holder’s bowling was remarkable in the innings. In his 10 overs, he gave just 13 runs and took the initial four wickets. Kemar Roach and Dwayne Bravo took two wickets apiece and Kieron Pollard took one.

As soon as West Indies entered the ground, Mohammad Irfan dismissed Johnson Charles on the second  ball of the innings. In the fifth over, Bravo lost his wicket to Irfan, giving catch to wicketkeeper Umar Akmal. The game was now getting lively.

Pakistani players were imbued with enthusiasm, but there was much more to come. The last ball of the same over was a nightmare for the hosts. A direct throw by Misbah ended the innings of Chris Gayle. The tourists broke into jubilation as if they had won a football World Cup. Pakistan had now firm grasp over the game. Lendl Simmons and Marlon Samuels tried to push the score, but they could only add 17 runs. West Indies were 41 in 22 overs.

[caption id="attachment_1873" align="alignright" width="250"]Shahid Afridi scored 76 runs and took seven wickets (WICB) Shahid Afridi scored 76 runs and took seven wickets (WICB)[/caption]

When Afridi was introduced, all hell broke loose. He bagged all the remaining wickets through his bowling which was a combination of normal legbreak, googly and fast deliveries. The unforgettable moment was when Afridi reciprocated his wicket with Pollard, who had been a nuisance for Lala in the first innings.

West Indies were all-out on 98 runs in the 41st over and Pakistan sealed a 126-run victory.

Afridi gave just 12 runs in nine overs and took seven wickets. It was the second-best bowling of any player in the ODIs and the best by any Pakistani bowler. He broke Waqar Younis’ national record of 7 for 36. Had Afridi taken one more wicket, he could have broken Chaminda Vaas’ world record of 8 for 19.

When Afridi dismissed Dwayne Bravo, it was the 350th wicket of his career and he became the third Pakistani bowler ever to touch the mark. Moreover, he has now become the only player in the game’s history to have scored 7,000 runs and claimed 350 wickets.

He took a five-wicket haul and scored half-century in one match for the third time. No player has ever done so even more than once.

Afridi was given the man-of-the-match award for his performance, the 30th time he received the award – most by any Pakistani player.

He second between the two teams will be played on July 16 at the same venue.

Pakistan beat West Indies in a low-scoring match, the first of a five-match ODI series, thanks to an all-round performance by Shahid Afridi.

West Indies won the toss and chose to field. Pakistan’s start was a nightmare. Half of the team was back to the pavilion below 50 runs. In what seemed to be another defeat for the green shirts, Shahid Afridi came and salvaged the match for the team. Captain Misbah-ul-Haq also played his part. Although Misbah played a bit slow, but it was the need of the time.

Pakistan managed to make 224 runs, including Afridi’s 76 and Misbah’s 52.

West Indies outshine the tourists in poor batting. Seven of their batsmen could not touch double digits. It was again Afridi here who worked miracles with the ball as well. The hosts were bowled out on as low as 98. It was a hefty 126-run victory for Pakistan.
For many coming months none of the tour of Pakistan is confirmed and all the arrangements will be finalised at the eleventh hour. As happened in the case of  tour to West Indies when the schedule has been announced two weeks before the series begin. The West Indies Cricket Board has announced the schedule for the short tour, according to which Pakistan will play five ODIs and two T20s in the Caribbean.

[caption id="attachment_1778" align="alignright" width="300"]Two Tests have been excluded for the tour after West Indies decision to play a tri-series (Photo: AFP) Two Tests have been excluded from the tour after West Indies decided to play a tri-series (Photo: AFP)[/caption]

Originally, Pakistan were to play two Tests, five one-dayers and two T20s during the tour, but West Indies planned a tri-nation series, involving India and Sri Lanka in the same days and is going to begin from June 28. The move deprived Pakistan of a possible chance to beat West Indies in Test series for the first time in Caribbean. Though West Indies demanded Pakistan to postpone the tour until August so that both teams could also play Test series, Pakistan refused as there is a chance for them hosting India in a series to be played in the UAE or some other venue. Moreover, Pakistan also owe Zimbabwe a tour which they putt off last year. Against this backdrop, it was not possible for Pakistan to play West Indies in August, which is why two Tests have been excluded from the tour.

The series will start with an ODI on July 14 in Guyana followed by the second ODI at the same venue. The remaining three one-dayers will be played on July 19, 21 and 24 in Saint Lucia. The only two Twenty20s will be held at Arnos Vale Ground, Saint Vincent on July 27 and 28.

The tour is going to be quite a challenge for the new management of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) after the team’s implosion in the recently concluded Champions Trophy. Let’s see which players will be selected for the crucial tour.

Following is the complete schedule of the tour.

Rain in the 1992 World Cup, defeat in the hands of West Indies in the 1996 quarter-finals, tie in 1999 semi-finals and out of the tournament and loss in 2003 World Cup after a match ended in draw according to Duck-worth Lewis method. Against this backdrop, it can be safely said that South Africa have beaten all and sundry. All the drama and thrill were included in the quarterfinal-like match at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff and South Africa would not have thought they had been through to the semi-finals this way.

[caption id="attachment_1648" align="alignright" width="224"]Only one ball threw West Indies out of the tournament: the dismissal of Kieron Pollard (Photo: ICC) Only one ball threw West Indies out of the tournament: the dismissal of Kieron Pollard (Photo: ICC)[/caption]

The match that had been reduced to 31 overs because of rain was in complete control of West Indies. When the 26th over ended, they needed 187 runs after losing five wickets, and they were on 190 by the time. But on the first ball of the 27th over, the catch of Kieron Polalrd by Sale Steyn changed the whole scenario. And it did not take more than a few seconds. As the next batsman Darren Sammy reached the crease, rain came in and West Indies remained at the score where they were, i.e. 190 for six, which was not enough for the victory. And it never rains but it pours. The match could not be resumed again and was declared tied. However, the Proteas proceeded to the semi-finals because of better run rate and West Indies could not make it the final four despite all-out efforts by Marlon Samuels, Chris Gayle, Dwayne Smith and Pollard.

Both teams of the Group B were totally relying on the match after having beaten by India and won against Pakistan. But the bad weather in Cardiff spoilt the mood of the match. West Indies were more worried because even if the match was totally abandoned, the result would be against them. When the match resumed after rain stopped, both teams had 31 overs to play. West Indies put South Africa into bat after winning the toss and the latter showed aggressiveness from the beginning keeping in view the reduced number of overs.

Openers Hashim Amla and Colin Ingram provided their team with an 80-run opening stand. Ingram’s 73 off 63 was the best innings of the day, mainly because it lead the Proteas to victory. Apart from Ingram, David Miller scored 38 off 29, AB de Villiers 37 off 26 and Faf du Plessis 35 off 32. It was because of these quick innings that South Africa posted a huge total of 230 runs in 31 overs.

By looking at the strong bowling line-up of South Africa, who also had Dale Steyn in the playing eleven, it seemed difficult that West Indies could even come close to the target. But despite losing three wickets inside 100 runs, the Caribbean did not lose their grip off the match.

Samuels and Pollard played decisive stokes when the required run rate was between eight and nine. Samuels first carved out 16 runs, hitting a six and two fours off Ryan McLaren and then snatched 17 runs from Robin Peterson to lead the team to 147. When West Indies needed another 84 runs in the 10 overs, Samuels was clean bowled by Steyn at a time when he was just two runs short of half-century.

Then came captain Dwayne Bravo who supported Pollard in nearing the target. After 26 overs, West Indies victory score should be 187 after losing five wickets and they were already three runs ahead of the target. But on the first ball of the next over, Pollard gave away a catch to Steyn on third man. Now the D/L par score was 191 for six. But rain arrived again. West Indies were one run behind the target and when the match ended in a draw, South Africa proceeded to the semi-finals, thanks to their greater run rate. Ironically, had Mother Nature intervened one ball earlier, the result would have been the other way round – West Indies would have sealed victory.

Ingram was declared the man of the match for his riveting batting.

Now South Africa will play the first semi-final against the number one team of Group A on June 19 at The Oval. India, who are now at the top position in Group B, will face the second number team of Group A on June 20 in Cardiff in the second semi-final.

As the Group B is now decided, Group A is still open to all four teams and England-New Zealand and Australia-Sri Lanka matches on June 16 and June 17 will be actually the quarter-finals.

India have reached the semi-finals and ended Pakistan’s already slim chances of proceeding to the next round, beating West Indies by eight wickets in their second match of Group B. This makes Pak-India match on June 15 an insipid one which will have no consequences for any team, except that Pakistan could pacify the irate fans, who are waiting to give their national team very very ‘warm’ reception, by beating India having been defeated in the first two matches.

India reached England for the Champions Trophy amid the spot-fixing scandal in the Indian Premier League (IPL) that rocked the game in the country. By now, many big guns have come under the spotlight. Even the wife of team’s captain, MS Dhoni, came under suspicion. Against this backdrop, nobody was expecting that India would make it to the last four. But Dhoni XI have proved after winning the first two matches that if any team is going to lift the title on performance, it is ‘Team India’.

Shikhar Dhawan with his bat and ‘Sir’ Ravindra Jadeja with his ball contained West Indies and helpe India seal victory. Dhawan scored second consecutive ODI century in the match.

West Indies came to bat and despite Chris Gayle’s early dismissal, runs continued to add up. Johnson Charles had been mercilessly beating Indian bowlers until he was out lbw by Jadeja. In the next over Jadeja dismissed Marlon Samuels and again in the preceding over he took the wicket of Ramnaresh Sarwan to collapse India’s batting line-up. The West Indies who had been 103 for one was now 109 for four. Darren Bravo, along with his brother Dwayne Bravo, tried to stop the fall of wickets, but only for a while and lost his wicket to Ravichandran Ashwin n the 34th over. Half of West Indies team was back to the benches on 140, with the batting powerplay still left.

Now Wet Indies were relying on Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard, but the former was dismissed by Umesh Yadav in the powerplay. And who took his catch? Yes, ‘Sir’ Jadeja. Pollard too lost his wicket in the 43rd over, leaving former captain Darren Sammy with one end completely vulnerable. Sammy guided his team to 233 runs at a time when it seemed they would not even cross 200. He had replaced Denesh Ramdin in the match and justified his place in the side. Hitting two sixes and two fours in the 49th over and two fours and one six in the over, Sammy helped the Caribbean set a respectable target. He scored 56 off 35, hitting five fours and fours sixes.

[caption id="attachment_1491" align="alignright" width="222"]West Indies failed to set a defendable target despite Sammy’s belated fireworks (Photo: AFP) West Indies failed to set a defendable target despite Sammy’s belated fireworks (Photo: AFP)[/caption]

Putting aside Sammy’s innings, West Indies middle order miserably failed against India as did against Pakistan, and after Charles, the next seven batsmen could only add 80 runs to the total.

Jadeja took his five-wicket haul in 10 overs, giving 36 runs, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Yadav, Ishant Sharma and Ashwin took one wicket apiece.

India set the tone for the victory from the outset, posting a 101-run opening stand. Century partnerships by the Indian openers in the two consecutive matches in English conditions, which are infamous for batsmen, are enough for great bowlers to have butterflies. Dhawan, who was given the man-of-the-match award for his 114 against South Africa, seemed impregnable against West Indies, too. India’s only wickets that fell were of Rohit Sharma (52) and Virat Kohli (22).

After a brief pause because of rain, India sailed through to victory on the first ball of the 40th over. Dhawan and Dinesh Karthik remained not out on 102 and 51, respectively.

As India have become the first team to reach the semi-finals and Pakistan the first to buy tickets home, South Africa and West Indies will now face each other in a do-or-die match.

The venue was The Oval, Champions Trophy’s match and a two-wicket victory by West Indies – the history repeated itself as Pakistan had to pay the price of their batsmen’s failure. In the 2004 edition of the tournament, West Indies beat England in the final at the same venue and with the same margin, and now in the last Champions Trophy, they gave Pakistan a drubbing and claimed a two-wicket victory in the low-scoring thriller.

[caption id="attachment_1373" align="alignright" width="241"]Kemar Roach had the first and the last laughs: three wickets and the winning stroke (Photo: ICC) Kemar Roach had the first and the last laughs: three wickets and the winning stroke (Photo: ICC)[/caption]

Pakistani miserably failed to perform and no batsman could touch double figures, barring Misbah-ul-Haq (96) and Nasir Jamshed (50). Minus the duo’s share from the total, what you get is just 18 runs – two runs by each batsman on average. On the other hand, West Indie, too, somehow managed to chase down the target, but almost all of their batsmen played their bit.

In the first match of the tournament, batsmen ruled the day, disregarding the English conditions, but today’s match at The Oval saw bowler’s come out of hibernation. A total of 342 runs were scored in the match and 18 wickets were fallen, but the thriller had all the peaks and troughs that make a game unforgettable.

West Indies won the toss in the morning and put Pakistan into bat as expected. Pakistan lived up to West Indies’ expectations and performed as poorly as possible. They would have been all out before reaching the 100-run mark, had the third umpire not saved Misbah on duck. Kemar Roach helped West Indies to strengthen their position by dismissing Imran Farhat (2), Mohammad Hafeez (4) and Asad Shafiq (0) in a single spell. But Roach had a less share in the fiasco and the credit must go to the shot selection of Pakistani batsmen.

Misbah entered the ground when Pakistan were 15 for three and he put in a captain’s innings. Misbah escaped an lbw appeal on the first ball, but on the second ball he was almost out when the ball kissed his bat and went to wicket-keeper Denesh Ramdin, who took the catch and apparently ended Misbah’s innings as the umpire raised his index finger. But the umpire felt something fishy just in the nick of time and referred the decision to the third umpire, who found that the ball touched the ground after landing into Ramdin’s gloves. The umpire changed his decision and Misbah was now once again at the crease.

Jamshed and Misbah added 90 runs in the fourth wicket and at the time when both seemed to poised to amass a big total, Jamshed lost his wicket, trying to hit Sunil Narine. Shoaib Malik was sent packing in the same over with a golden duck, and moments later Kamran Akmal was returning to the pavilion after spending 12 minutes at the crease. Now West Indies were in complete control of the game as Pakistan’s one end was in a very vulnerable position.

Wahab Riaz had the misfortune to lose his wicket after Misbah’s shot disturbed the bails at the non-striker’s end, touching Bravo’s hand on its way. Saeed Ajmal’s blind running on the wicket cost him his innings. Misbah and Mohammad Irfan added 32 runs in the last wicket, but the latter departed at the time when the captain was just four runs away from his maiden century. Pakistan innings finished on 170 and Misbah left the ground on 96 not out.

Roach and Narine took three wickets apiece, while Ravi Rampaul and Dwayne Bravo also took one wicket each.

West Indies’ start was not good either as the lost Johnson Charles (9) and Darren Bravo (0) to Irfan on just 15 runs. A 60-run partnership between Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels played a pivotal part in the low-scoring match.

Pakistan tried to come back in the match in vain many a time. Gayle was clean bowled by Ajmal after making 39 off 47, including a six and four fours, and then Riaz dismissed Ramnaresh Sarwan, who had just entered the ground. But the bowlers could do nothing as the batsmen had not done anything. Match did enter an interesting phase but remained out of Pakistan’s reach, even at the time when West Indies were 94 for five.

Pakistan’s optimism vanished into thin air after a 43-run partnership between Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo. Although Pakistan took more wickets after that, but the episode ended in the 41st over when Roach hit a match-winning four. What else Twenty20 world champions need than starting their Champions Trophy campaign with a two-wicket win?

Pakistan scored 30 to 40 runs less required to set a defendable target. And they will be in bigger trouble as their upcoming matches are against South Africa and arch-rivals India. West Indies will also face the same opponents but they will be through to the semi-finals if they win one more match.

Irfan was the most successful bowler for Pakistan by taking three wickets against 32 runs in nine overs, while Ajmal and Riaz took two wickets apiece. Mohammad Hafeez also took one wicket. It would be an injustice not to mention the effort put in by Pakistani bowlers. They tried to defend and indefensible target and the same performance is expected in the coming matches, but the remaining rests with the batsmen, because it would be futile to pin all your hopes on bowlers if batsmen failed to perform.

Roach was given the man-of-the-match award for his killing heroics with the ball. West Indies are now at the top of the Group B after the win, with India on the second position.

The next match of the tournament is scheduled to play tomorrow (Saturday) in Birmingham between defending champions Australia and the hosts England.
