The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has awarded its Central Contracts for the 2013 Calendar year for 21 players according to their performances, and surprisingly, Younis Khan and Shahid Afridi are in Category A despite their “wonderful performances”.

Both players are only representing the team only in one format of the game. Afridi has retired from the Test cricket and has been ruled out of the one-day format, thus he is part of the side only in T20s. On the other hand, Younis is still in the Test team, but he has been excluded from the ODI team. He took retirement from Twenty20 format four years ago.
However, the players must be feeling delighted as they have been deprived of their salaries for the past six months. Moreover, the PCB has reportedly raised their salaries by 15 percent.
The board increased players’ salaries by 25 percent last year, thus the current rise is less than the previous one but an increment of 40 percent in two years is welcoming. However, denying players’ salaries to get their signatures on the contracts is unfair. Because of the same techniques of the Sri Lankan board, their tea, and players lack consistency.
Pakistan Test and ODI captain Misbah ul Haq, T20 captain Mohammad Hafeez, and present world’s number one spinner Saeed Ajmal are also in A category apart from Younis and Afridi.
Four players who are part of the current 15-man squad for the year’s biggest tournament are placed in the Stipend category: Wahab Riaz, Ehsan Adil, Umar Amin and Asad Ali.
Abdur Rahman, Umar Akmal and Umar Gul who were included in the Category A in the 2012 contracts have been relegated to Category B this time.
Aizaz Cheema and Taufeeq Umar have been relegated to Category C from B.
Before the recent alleged rise of 15 percent, the Category A players were being given Rs385,000 in Tests, Rs363,000 in ODIs and Rs275,000 in T20s in terms of match fees. The Category B players were receiving Rs330,000 in Tests, 275,000 in one-dayers and 220,000 in T20s, and the Category C players were receiving 275,000 in Tests, 220,000 in ODIs and 165,000 in T20s as match fee.
