Pietersen, 32, was injured during a series against the Black Caps in New Zealand and missed the final Test.

"Injuries are a sportsman's worst nightmare! This one is hurting me the most," Pietersen posted on Twitter.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said on Tuesday that Pietersen will miss the series to be held in England next month.

“Kevin Pietersen has been ruled out of the upcoming Test series against New Zealand as he continues his recovery from significant bone bruising to his right knee,” an ECB statement said.

“He will have a repeat scan next week to determine when he is able to resume training.”

Pietersen will also not take part in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) because of the injury.

England will play the first Test against New Zealand from May 16 at Lord’s and then second Test from May 24 in Leeds.

England have quite a busy schedule ahead as after the two-Test series, they will host the ICC Champions Trophy from June 6 and then a five-Test Ashes series against Australia starting from July 10.

They will then play another away Ashes series against the Kangaroos in Australia from November 21 to January 7.

Pietersen made his Test debut in 2005 and played 94 Tests, scoring 7499 runs at 49.01.
